Course Introduction
Course Requrements and Expectations
-
A lot of the work in this class is online - most of your assignments must be submitted electronically.
-
There are one or two deadlines every week for your work.
-
You should expect this course to take about 18 hours of work each week; this work includes time that we spend on campus in class, watching/reading lectures online, completing problems online, discussing mathematics with other students online, and doing work on your own for practice.
-
To begin the course, you must complete ALL of the following steps and complete any assignments listed for this week on the Assignments page by the end of the first week of classes.
-
In addition to the scheduled class meetings for this course, much of the work will be done online, at whatever time of day works for you, as long as you meet the course deadlines. While you won't be interacting with me or your classmates in person during these assignments, you will still have to regularly interact with me and your classmates electronically.
To see when the class meetings are scheduled, click here.
Before you begin the course, you must complete the following steps:
-
Sign up for the Class Mailing List: Click here for instructions on how to do this!
This is how you will receive all class emails, so be sure you use an email address which you will check at least 3 times per week.
-
Set up your BMCC Email: You can use any email address you like for this list, but you do also need to periodically check your BMCC email also, since any emails that are sent officially through BMCC or through Brightspace will go to your BMCC email address. If you have not used BMCC email before, click here for instructions on how to setup BMCC email.
-
Put my email address on your email program's accept list: If you plan on using an email address which is not a BMCC email address, make sure to put my email address profwladis@gmail.com, and the group email list bmccmath056@yahoogroups.com, on your email program's accept list so that my emails to you are not filtered to your spam folder. To find out how to do this, contact your email provider.
-
Buy the Book and WebAssign Access code:
Click here for information on how to buy the book and code!
-
Fill out the Student Information Form: The purpose of this form is so that I can put you into groups for the course, and so that I have contact information for you in case I need to reach you about your status in the course. Click HERE to fill out this form!
-
WebAssign: All of the Homework in this class will be online in the WebAssign system at www.webassign.net.
Instructions on how to register for the first time, (or how to login to this course, if you've already used WebAssign before) can be found by clicking HERE.
-
Sign up for Google Docs: The group projects for this course will be submitted in Google Docs. If you already have a Gmail or other Google account, you can use that account for the course. However, if you have never created a login for a Google product before, you will need to create one by going here and clicking on the red "Sign up" button in the top right corner of that page.
After you have created a Google login, you will need to go to the page where all the group projects are hosted for this course, by clicking HERE. You only need to go to this page one time at the beginning of the semester, and then the class folder will be added to your Google Docs login after that, and you will be able to see it every time you go to your main Google Docs page.
-
Login to Brightspace for the first time: The online discussion boards are hosted in Brightspace, which can always be accessed through the CUNY portal at www.cuny.edu.
For instructions on how to logon to Brightspace for the first time, click here for instructions on how to logon.
If you have never used Brightspace before, I recommend that you click here for information about how to attend an orientation session.
-
Read the Syllabus and the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): The syllabus and the FAQs page (always available on the menu at the left) explain how this course works, how grades are calculated, what is expected, and more. You must read them before you begin the course so that you know what to expect.
-
Go to the Assignments Page: Now you are ready to begin the course - look at the Assignments page to see which Assignments will be DUE BY THE END OF THIS WEEK!
You can also always get to the Assignments Page by going to the course webpage in Brightspace and clicking on the button there labeled "Assignments."
